Bed fan vs air conditioning vs tower fan: an honest comparison

August 12, 2026 6 min readBy Aerwell Product Team

We sell a bed fan, so treat this with appropriate scepticism — but there are genuinely nights and homes where air conditioning is the right answer. Here is how the three options compare on the things that matter at 3am.

Air conditioning

Best raw cooling power, and the only option that meaningfully reduces humidity in a whole room. It is also the loudest, the most expensive to run, and the hardest on a shared bed because it cools both people equally whether they want it or not.

Compressor cycling is the hidden sleep cost: the change from on to off is exactly the kind of intermittent noise that fragments sleep.

Tower and pedestal fans

Cheap and widely available, but they blow across the top of the duvet rather than under it. That dries out your face and sinuses while doing very little for the trapped heat around your torso and legs. Most are also noticeably louder than a purpose-built bed fan at comparable airflow.

Bed fans

Narrowest use case, best fit for the specific problem of overheating under bedding. Low energy draw, very low noise on sleeping speeds, and personal: one side of the bed can be cooled without affecting the other.

Limitations are real too. A bed fan will not rescue a 32°C bedroom on its own, and it does not dehumidify. In a genuine heatwave it works best alongside a cooler room.

Quick comparison

Rough, real-world figures for a single night of use.

  • Noise on sleeping setting — bed fan ~30 dB · tower fan ~45 dB · AC ~50 dB with cycling
  • Energy per night — bed fan pennies · tower fan low · AC high
  • Cools under the duvet — bed fan yes · tower fan barely · AC indirectly
  • Works for one person only — bed fan yes · tower fan partly · AC no
  • Portable / travel — bed fan yes · tower fan no · AC no

The takeaway

If your problem is a hot room, cool the room. If your problem is waking up damp under the covers while the room feels fine, a bed fan solves it more cheaply and far more quietly.
